Q&A with Markos Mylonas from Snail Performance

Markos Mylonas

Markos Mylonas

Markos Mylonas from Snail Performance has been setting records and smashing it on the Global Time Attack Series. We get this Team Turbosmart driver in the hot seat for an inside scoop.

Q&A with Markos Mylonas

Where does your love of motorsport come from?

I guess you could say that motorsport has been in my blood since day one. My Mom’s side of the family had a deep love for two and four-wheeled things, so I got exposed at a very young age to what is my passion. Both my Grandma and Grandpa rode motorcycles and built hotrods back in their day, and also both of my Uncles and my one Uncle, Steve, raced circle dirt track all over the world and even lived in Auckland, NZ, for a few years while competing. Fun fact about my Mom, she used to be Steve Saleen’s Travel Agent back in the early 80s!

How long have you been involved in motorsports?

I’ve been involved in motorsports since 2009.

Where does your love of motorsport come from?

I would probably credit my brother and mutual friends who helped spark the Motorsport bug within.  My love for the sport and community started to take shape when I was 17 and purchased my first Mitsubishi Evolution 2.  Coming from a competitive swimming background from a young age, I have always tended to be driven with a scope to always improve on my previous best – at that point in my childhood, I would probably say I looked up to and was influenced by NZ swimming greats – Trent Bray & Danyon Loader.

Markos Mylonas

What age did you start racing and what was your first race car?

Oddly enough, my first race/competition was an Autocross event in Tucson, AZ. At the time, I had my 2005 Subaru Impreza RS, which had some tasteful modifications done to it, and I ended up winning Novice Class, which got my feet wet into motorsports as a competitor.

What car/set up are you currently running?

I am currently campaigning my 2006 Subaru WRX, with numerous modifications from Turbosmart, Forge Motorsport, Honeywell Garrett, IAG Performance, COBB Tuning, CSF Radiators, Ignite Racing Fuel, Mann Engineering, Pipercross Air Filters, and RAYS Wheels.

What made you choose the current color scheme on the car?

Taylor Wilson designed the current livery, my teammate and fellow Snail Fam. It was created via Forza Motorsport many years ago and was able to be adapted to the car as you see it today. It’s pretty special to me, as I lost my Mom to breast cancer in October of 2008 when I was 19. The pink throughout the car shows awareness and support to those fighting and who have fought Breast Cancer, all the way down to the custom Arizona Breast Cancer Awareness plate, which reads “RACECR.”

What series are you currently racing in?

I currently compete in the Global Time Attack series in their Street AWD class.

Markos Mylonas

What do you get up to while you’re not on the track?

Going to other motorsport events HAHA, fitness, hanging out with friends/family and playing silly buggers with our dogs.

What series do you one day hope to race in?

Oh man, this is a good one! There’s so many excellent series’ out there that I can’t pick just one! SuperGT leads the pack for me, BTCC, V8 Supercars, WTCC, DTM, Pirelli WC, and the IMSA Weathertech SportsCar Series round out that list. The crazy aero and excellent tracks throughout the Far East are what draw me to SuperGT, plus their fans are INSANELY dedicated to their favourites; it’s unreal.

What has been the most memorable moment of your motorsports career?

The most memorable moment of my career would have to be this current 2017 Season for sure. Between the track records I’ve broken and reset, to the trials and tribulations we (Snail Performance) have been through as a team preparing the car for the year, it’s been one for the books. The best part is there are still two more events and potentially two more records to break! Adding ACS Roval and the legendary Buttonwillow CW13 to my list would cap off the season nicely.

Markos Mylonas

What is your favorite race track and why?

My favourite track would have to be Road Atlanta for a few reasons. For those that don’t follow me or Global Time Attack as a series, the event in Atlanta falls alongside Forumla Drifts’ “Drift Atlanta”, which it seems like EVERYONE in the greater Atlanta area is aware of. The stands are PACKED, flying down the back straight into Turn 10A and 10B. The track in itself is worth making a trip across the country for; high speeds, natural elevation, and all that weird green stuff you don’t see in Arizona, real nature! The whole atmosphere during the weekend is fantastic, must be experienced!

Favourite car movie of all time?

My favourite car movie of all time. I’d say Gone in 60 Seconds—a classic.

If you could have your dream car what would it be?

Well, like any other car person, you can’t have just one, so I will give you my three, haha. 997 Porsche GT3RS in that amazing Green, 22B Subaru Impreza, and some outrageous Chevy Nova!

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

I’d say if I could pick a superpower, it would probably be being able to fly, so you can see the World and go wherever you want!

What do you like doing while you’re not on the track breaking records?

Some of the things I enjoy doing off-track are finding new places to eat with my girlfriend Sally, playing with our two Corgis, Carl and Lucy, spending time with our teammates Taylor and Travis when we’re all in one place, and spending time in SoCal with the Legend Ken Suen and crew.

Tell us more about your hair….what’s the story behind the famous Markos hair?

HAHA oh yes, the “Best Hair in Time Attack” as so I’ve been told! Honestly, I can’t remember where it came up, but one of my pre-race weekend rituals is always getting a fresh fade from my Barber, Anthony, here in Phoenix. It snowballed into seeing who had the best haircut out of all the drivers, and it came down to myself, Ken Suen, and Dai Yoshihara, haha. Now it’s become a full-on joke anytime we are trackside.

Matchbox or Hot Wheels?

Hot Wheels!

The Simpsons or Family Guy?

I never was huge into The Simpsons or Family Guy, but I was a fan of Rocko’s Modern Life and Hey! Arnold haha. I recently started watching Rick and Morty, which is funny.

What is your favourite food?

SUSHI! LOVE sushi, and we aren’t talking Cali rolls here. I mean good nigiri and sashimi. Love Korean food too, super good stuff. Also down for Dim Sum, Taiwanese Hot Pot, and you can’t forget Tacos and ELOTE!

When did you get involved with Turbosmart?

My first Turbosmart experience was back in 2012 when we (Snail Performance) got set up with Taylor and Travis at first!

What is your favourite thing about Turbosmart?

I can’t really pick just one thing I love about Turbosmart, the products honestly do speak for themselves, we’ve NEVER had a failure on anything we’ve run and abused since 2012, the support we always receive is second to none, anytime we need ANYTHING someone is there to help, plus you all love Crown and Dr Pepper too!

If you had to give advice to someone looking to get into racing, what would you say to them?

The best advice I can give someone who wants to get into racing is simple; don’t feel the need to throw tons of money in modifications at the car before you ever get on track! Get out there in a stock car, on factory tires, and start getting comfortable behind the wheel. Once you’ve reached your peak with what you have, then start changing and modifying things from there. You’ll have a much greater appreciation for noticing a difference from those modifications in the future.

If you could go back 5 years in time, what advice would you give yourself?

If I could go back five years and give myself advice, I’d say you should have just bought an STI! LOL. It would have saved me SO MANY headaches at the beginning. But oh well, I love my car and how it’s come along strong in the last year or so and wouldn’t trade it for the world!

Any projects that you are working on that you would like to talk about/share?

I do love being on track and having a functional car, but I also like the form side of it too, and I want to rebuild the motor in my former track car, my 2005 RS Impreza, which is bagged and lying on the ground with some super aggressive wheels on it. I miss the low life, “stancing the nation”, as everyone joked, but have been dedicating all my time to my car and Sally’s as well. And also need to get Taylor going on his car too! Plus, I still haven’t done my Dually swap on my 2003 Ram 3500 Cummins either. Maybe I could get an extra 12 hours a day? Haha!

The Global Time Attack is comprised of a team of leaders in the tuner, time attack and traditional motorsports fields. There is no doubt that the dawn of time attack, in its purest form can be traced back to the Ibaraki Prefecture in the northeastern part of Japan’s Kanto region; more specifically the rather non-descript 1.27-mile Tsukuba circuit. Q&A: Andy Forrest

Andy Forrest

Andy Forrest

Andy Forrest has just finished a build that blew everyone’s breath away. Built-in his shed in Scotland, he has a straightforward goal: to be the fastest time attack car in the world. We caught up with Andy as he plans to take on all comers to break the existing lap record of 1:22.19 and take the top Pro-Class spot in the process.

World Time Attack and the Stormtrooper

Andy, thanks so much for taking the time to do an interview with us. I guess first up, the most important question we like to ask is; Matchbox or Hot Wheels?

Oh, I am not going to lie. I’ve never really been into either; my childhood was spent taking boats apart to make them lighter and faster!

Everyone you talk to across the motorsport scene will have some loving memory of working on a car with someone close to them or a moment that they realised they wanted to do this for a living. Where does your love of motorsport come from?

I never actually had anyone lead me into motorsport or even cars! Before I was driving age, I was tuning my boat. I think my love of motorsport came from racing my first car down my local coastal road, a road I still frequent for testing purposes.

So you are coming over again to the Australian WTAC for 2017. Any reason for specifically targeting Australia, especially with the UK having their time attack?

The best and maddest cars from worldwide congregate at World Time Attack. It’s a motorsport event like no other.
Currently, UK Time Attack has only one car in pro-extreme….where’s the fun in that?

2015 saw some disappointment that forced you out of the competition early—brushing that aside, you have had a lot more time to prep for 2017. What goals have you set out to achieve for this year’s WTAC?

Get on the timing screens! The car has undergone massive changes, some of which have never been tried in competitive motorsport, if at all!
This shows the world what can be done from in a shed if you put your mind to it …oh, and have a few screws loose!

You have indeed built some crazy stuff over your career, and 2017 is no exception. What fuels you to keep pushing the limits? Where do these radical ideas come from?

That is a question that I am asked all the time, and the answer is “I don’t know”. So many people look at what everyone else is doing and copy them! I find that boring and offers no mental stimulation. I am an engineer to trade so that age-old saying comes into play “adapt and overcome.”
Not all of these radical ideas work!

A lot of us common folk have suffered the disappointment of the first car we ever wanted versus what we actually got. What’s was your very first car and was it everything you hoped and dreamed for?

My first car was Vauxhall VX4/90, and it was slow. What I wanted back then was a 3.0 Capri, which just happened to be my second car!

Andy Forrest

Favourite car movie of all time?

I wouldn’t say I like car movies. I know that may be hard to believe, but I am always watching them like that car couldn’t/can’t do that, or even sound like that!
However, the way the cars are driven in James Bond movies during filming is pretty cool (pro driver in a cage, on the roof).

You have built a bit of an affinity with the Star Wars Stormtrooper. Can you give us a bit of an insight into this, and will the infamous Stormtrooper appear at this year’s WTAC?

When we first released images of the front end on the car, many people on social media said it looked like a Stormtrooper, it grew arms and legs from there, and after contacting Jedi-Robe in London, we had a full-scale Stormtrooper armour in the garage!
Will the Stormtrooper be a WTAC…..you will have to attend and see ;). One thing is for sure, the E11 Blaster (Stormtrooper’s weapon) will not be attending as I was told if I bring that, I would be invited to spend up to 10 years in an Aussie jail!

What do you get up to while you’re not on the track?

At the moment, developing the car, we eat, sleep and breathe that car.
Personal and family time get sacrificed a lot, but I have an understanding partner and family! Beach holidays are high up on our to-do list, so we will be spending a few extra weeks in Australia to chill out after the event!

Andy Forrest

This opinion divides many people around the globe, and it is an essential question around the Turbosmart office. It will divide you into two people; The Simpsons or Family Guy?

We need a third category here, neither! If I watch cartoons, I may not think up some of these mad ideas!

What is your favourite thing about Turbosmart?

The relationship I have with Chris Milne and the rest of the Turbosmart team is excellent! I can usually find Chris attending most of the significant events in the UK,, so I can also have a chat face-to-face and get his expert opinion on various topics.
The Turbosmart product range and quality are second to none!

If you could go back 5 years in time, what advice would you give yourself?

Build something with a Chevy V8………….so much cheaper and sounds just as good, with turbos, of course.

Kat Benson finishes Third in class at Prowear NZ Superlap Series RD2

Kat Benson - World-Time-Attack

Kat Benson

Hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, Kat Benson, a Team Turbosmart ambassador driver, is ripping it up around the race scene. She is part of a new breed of emerging female drivers, and her passion for the sport makes us proud to have her as part of the crew.

The Prowear NZ Superlap Series

The Prowear NZ Superlap series kicked off the new year with a weekend at Taupo’s Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park’s international circuit. The event saw the rain stay away, and although the track got a little slippery later in the weekend it was still good enough to smash the current NZ Superlap track records in all three classes.

Kat Benson Finished in Third Place

Team Turbosmart Katherine Benson finished with a third-place podium standing in the Pro-Street category and secured a 5th place overall result.  The Pro-Street category went down to the wire with this race event, with Kat Benson battling throughout both days directly against x2 very high horse-powered cars. The top 3 positions were only separated by less than a second.

Kat Benson

Championship Winning Driver Garth Walden

With three-time World Time Attack Championship winning driver Garth Walden was behind Team RevolutioNZ Evo 8. Scott Kreyl is finally starting to see some accurate results from this car, running remarkably consistent and out on track all weekend. Every lap posted was at least a second quicker than the previous track record that the team had set last season. Their best time of the weekend, quickly taking out the class, was a 1:28.487 — Garth is an absolute animal!

Garth Walden

Hans Ruiterman Finished in Second Place

Second place went to Hans Ruiterman’s Nissan Silvia S14. After doing some early testing laps on slicks, Hans switched over to an older set of semis to put down a 1:33.918 before heading home early to try and beat the holiday traffic.

This result also puts Hans into the second spot on the series leaderboard. All of this with minor head gasket issues!

Hans Ruiterman’s Nissan Silvia S14
Hans Ruiterman’s

Jason Shortt

Rounding out the podium was Jason Shortt of Shortty Racing’s Subaru WRX STI, looking much sharper after getting some paintwork sorted over the holiday period. Jason started the weekend well with a 1:41.171 but fell off a ripple strip in the second session resulting in a buckled wheel. Overnight repairs (read: large hammer and friendly Taupo garage) saw Kerri Mareeba take the wheel on Sunday morning for a slow test lap somewhere over the wrong side of 2 minutes, but enough to decide the car was safe enough to send Jason out again for some hot laps, however, he wasn’t able to beat his Saturday time.

Jason Shortt of Shortty Racing’s Subaru WRX STI

David Brew

Fourth place in the Open class went to David Brew, who spent a chunk of the weekend trying to coax his Hybrid Nissan 200SX GT-R into going straight rather than sideways, which can be an effort at the best of times on the twisty Taupo track, let alone when you’re driving a car that has been set up for drifting. David teamed up with David van der Haas (of Dave Science) to play with tyre pressures and other extraordinary wizardry cut times down to a solid 1:49.826.

David Brew

Andy Booking's

Pro Street All-Wheel Drive was a return of everyone’s favourite battle of NZ’s fastest street-driven GT-Rs. Andy Brooking’s first session on track in his R32 was a 1:37.230 (beating the Pro Street record held by Barry Manon’s mental Toyota Levin AE92 by 0.3 seconds).

Andy Booking's

Iain Clegg

Iain Clegg was a second behind in his R35 but kept pushing through the weekend to get down to a 1:37.511 on Sunday morning. Iain’s GPS lap timer was on the blink and showing quicker times, so Iain came out in the afternoon on slicks — using up his daily tyre change before realizing his official times hadn’t quite matched Andy. Unfortunately for the ST HiTec team, but they still had a lot of fun in the shootout on full slicks for a new personal unofficial best.

Iain Clegg

Kat Benson

Third place went to Katherine Benson in the Burgerfuel Mitsubishi Evo VII. Kat missed out on the Taupo rounds last season, so she took a few laps to get back in the zone before punching back hard with a 1:38.208 as her best time of the weekend.

Kat Benson

Morris Mustchin

Morris Mustchin made the most of the top 10 shootouts late on Sunday to do his best lap of 1:46.714 in his Subaru WRX STI V7. You know you’ve got a versatile car when you can drive it to the track, race it, sleep in it, race it again, then drive it all the way back home without missing a beat. Sahil Bhopal didn’t run on Saturday, so just had a few laps on Sunday to get his Mazda down to a 1:58.517.

Morris Mustchin

Dion Clerke

The Pro Street 2 Wheel drive class had a shakeup with the appearance of Dion Clerke we’ve seen Dion in Superlap before with his Nissan Skyline R32 GTS-T, but this weekend he had his Honda Integra at the track and was pushing it hard against Mark Collier’s ‘WEE 1’ turbo MX5. There wasn’t much in it, but Dion was able to take the class win with 1:46.857 while Mark slid into the second spot on 1:47.082.

Dion Clerke

Brian Matchett

Brian Matchett spent the weekend chasing but wasn’t able to better his first session time of 1:47.832. Team MacMorris Racing was up next, Jason in the black #333 Mazda MPS with a 1:47.912 (pulling double duty after coming directly from a holiday road trip) and Khan Mackesy in the red #77 Mazda MPS on 1:49.560.

Brian Matchett

Brian Schofield

Brian Schofield’s Commodore ran all weekend, including Friday for practice and driver training, without missing a beat for the best time of 1:51.257.

Brian Schofield’s Commodore

David Van Der Hass

David Van Der Haas was another competitor who had taken the race car out for a holiday road trip vehicle followed by a side step to the track complete with all camping gear packed into the back of his 3SGE Beams-powered Toyota Carina. David laid down a 1:51.661 in between taking photos and researching car setup for about half the field. Barend Bootha had his first Superlap outing in his immaculately presented MX-5 for a 1:52.314 before alternator issues cut his weekend short.

David van der Haas

Bradley Haines

Rounding out the 2WD field was Bradley Haines in his Savage Performance Nissan Silvia S14, smashing out a new PB of 1:57.877 for the Taupo International circuit — not bad for an SR20DE!

Bradley Haines

Luke Wellacott

Street All-Wheel Drive was a small field, made even smaller by a ripple strip drop-off in the first session for Luke Wellacott’s Evo X, cracking two rims and putting an end to racing for him before even getting to post a lap time.

Luke Wellacott

Team Evokits Owned by Simon Turner

The class win went to Team Evokits owned by Simon Turner. With Hans Ruiterman behind the wheel, they set a new Street class record of 1:41.023 (beating out the previous record of 1:42.175 set by Glenn Hodges’ 300zx in the two-wheel-drive class last season).

The Evokits Evo then saw regular driver Simon Turner step back in and get behind the wheel for a 1:42.465. Second place went to

Simon Turner
Team Evokits

Luke Parker

Luke Parker, who was also spotted in Taupo making use of the services of the friendly tyre guy at the ‘Wheel Addiction’ garage. Luke managed to get down from the mid 1:50’s to a 1:46.379 over the course of the weekend. Michael Nealis had the Subaru wagon out for its last to run on the current engine, putting down a 1:53.080 to take out the final podium position.

Luke Parker

Matt Gray

Our final class, Street two-wheel drive was taken out by Darren McDonald again, carefully sliding the big family car around the track for a 1:43.694. Matt Gray tried everything to keep up, including taking off the big wing from his Supra (and quickly putting it straight back on after noting it was three-seconds slower and a lot more sketchy without the aero assistance).

Matt also had some dramas with his heater hose going for a walk but was able to sort that out quickly and ended the weekend with a 1:44.242.

Matt Gray

Peach Ardagh

The Engineered to Feel husband and wife team took out third and fourth. In her black ‘Coke Zero’ K24-powered EK9 Civic Type R, Peach Ardagh managed a 1:49.193, while Joe Ardagh followed closely behind in the maroon B18CR-powered EK3 Civic with a new PB of 1:50.318.

Peach Ardagh

Joe Ardagh

Joe appeared to have a few mechanical issues but was able to get them all fixed trackside and not miss out on any racing. Just three points separate Joe and Peach on the season leaderboard at this stage.

Jake Haag

Jakke Haag’s unlikely racer, a Renault Clio is deceptively quick and came home with a 1:50.848. Aaron Krinkel’s MPS was consistent all weekend and set a best of 1:52.238 on Sunday morning. Texas Delaney’s MX5 ran 1:53s for most of the weekend but was able to pull out a 1:52.973 early Sunday. Greg Hirst was back behind the wheel of his red MR2 (affectionately known as ‘gutless’) while his blue Pro Open MR2 is still out of action. ‘Gutless’ put up a good fight and came home with a respectable 1:56.403. Aaron Soole was on the wrong side of 2 minutes, achingly close to breaking the barrier until the very last session where he smashed it hard and ducked under for a great 1:58.979.

Kaz Kostiuk Warren

Series Coordinator Kaz Kostiuk Warren took the BMW E30 for a kick around and will have been happy with a 2:02.169 and a working car to get him home safely at the end of the weekend (next time out we hope to see his new car debut).

Global Time Attack Series

Kat Benson

The Global Time Attack is comprised of a team of leaders in the tuner, time attack and traditional motorsports fields. There is no doubt that the dawn of time attack, in its purest form can be traced back to the Ibaraki Prefecture in the northeastern part of Japan’s Kanto region; more specifically the rather non-descript 1.27-mile Tsukuba circuit.
