Anti-Lag Valve Explained

TS-0552 1402 ALV40 Flow

The all-new addition to the Turbosmart line-up is the fresh air ALV40 (Anti-Lag Valve). They are designed to create a broader market for motorsport applications.

The anti-lag valve provides a means to maintain turbine speed, eliminate lag on gear changes & deceleration. This is achieved by allowing incoming charged fresh air from the turbo to be diverted safely into the exhaust manifold pre-turbo with the throttle at low opening angles to allow for safer spooling of the turbocharger, without the potentially damaging throttle based late combustion event style anti-lag that can induce high engine stresses and break connecting rods.

When the ALV valve is active, boost pressure is diverted around the engine (instead of going through it) into the exhaust manifold. Combined with fuel and ignition strategies (from the ECU), the turbo speed is maintained, and more importantly, a useable boost is ready for when the throttle is opened again.

ALV40 Features

The ALV40 features a 40mm valve diameter, a purpose-designed actuator housing with a sealed twin-chamber design and the top port being the primary control port. The spring is designed to open under vacuum conditions to allow the air to bypass the exhaust manifold. The lower chamber is utilised for twin-port control methods to control the valve irrespective of manifold pressure. The shaft seal allows for leakproof operation. Also, multiple fittings are supplied for ease of fitment and fabrication.

Developed for a variety of engine configurations; an outlet weld flange is required to be purchased separately to the correct application. The outlet system you require will depend on how you intend to plumb your ALV40 to your exhaust manifold. There are options to suit virtually all internal combustion engines either by plumbing into each cylidner runner, every 2nd cylinder runner or even into just 2 seperate turbocharger scrolls. Outlet flanges to suit multiple outlets (listed below) will need to be purchased seperately

For custom outlet plenums, use Single Outlet  (TS-0550-3101) to allow for the fabrication of your own solution.

Anti-lag | Do you have the best boost Response?

Engineered to Win!

Anti-lag is already a well-proven option to improve boost response on turbocharged engines, but Turbosmart has a new way to implement it via their Anti-lag valve. Traditionally anti-lag is operated via the throttle body, whereas Turbosmarts ALS valve does things a little differently, as explained by Andre at the 2018 Performance Racing Industry trade show.

Turbosmart and North Shore Toyota Join Forces for D1NZ Pro-Sport 2019

Turbosmart and New Zealand distribution partner, North Shore Toyota, have joined forces to take on the sponsorship of Pro-Sport (Pro-Am) for the 2019 season of D1NZ.

Turbosmart & NST have not been strangers to the event in the past, with Turbosmart stepping on board in 2018 to sponsor last years series. However, 2019 saw the opportunity for the two businesses to work more closely together and use their combined talent to partner on a deal to close out the class sponsorship for the amateur round of the NZ drift series.

“NST has been an amazing partnership. From the outset, this relationship has evolved from strength to strength as we continue to better serve our customers in the NZ market. We are really thrilled with what Peter, Nick and the team at NST have been and continue to do for our customers in that market. Going into this sponsorship together is an evolution of that trust”, says Brendan Lee, APAC Sales Manager, Turbosmart.

Looking back on 2018, it was a big year for Turbosmart in the D1NZ. It saw the introduction of new sponsorships for Turbosmart with Cole Armstrong Drift and Team Jenkins joining the family. While both teams remained staunchly competitive for the season, Armstrong managed to secure a back-to-back championship win after a rough start to the regular season, narrowly sealing out Darren Kelly’s 331 points, to lengthen the margin by 7 and win with 338.

“2018 was a big step for us, but the right one. The goals of D1NZ and the vision that Brendon White has for the series was moving in the right direction for Turbosmart. With the 2019 series, we had an opportunity to take it even further and adding the weight of NST into the mix to partner up with them on this was another step forward for all involved”, remarked James Horton, Global Marketing Manager, Turbosmart.

2019 will also see the introduction of another two Team Turbosmart drivers with both Darren Kelly and Matty Hill stepping into the fold. Both drivers will have their eyes on the prize focusing on the Pro-Championship series.

The 2019 D1NZ tournament kicked off its first round last weekend at Baypark in Tauranga with its Summer Smoke Out Round. NST was on site to catch all the action under the Turbosmart stand, and even unveiled the new livery to their own demo car, a Toyota Verossa, running a 1.5JZ with 455kW at the wheels.

Make sure you stay tuned to the D1NZ Facebook page for event details and live streams!

D1NZ Event Calendar:

RD2 Feb 15/16 – Max Motors Speedway – Wellington

RD3 Mar 16/17 – Hampton Downs – Waikato

RD4 Mar 30/31 – Pukekohe Raceway – Auckland

RD5 Apr 26/27 – Manfield Raceway – Manawatu

Turbosmart Introduces New Award Winning Anti-Lag Valve

Turbosmart wins award at SEMA 2018

THE NEWLY RELEASED TURBOSMART ANTI-LAG VALVE WAS THE MOST TALKED ABOUT Product AT SEMA 2018

The ALV40 (TS-0552-1402) is designed to bring a typical high-end motorsport application to a broader market for the racing industry. It generated so much hype that the product was welcomed with two separate media awards from different publishers worldwide and the Best New Product Award for Performance Street with the Turbosmart Universal Kompact EM Blow-Off Valve.

The anti-lag valve provides a means to maintain turbine speed and eliminate lag on gear changes & deceleration. Boost pressure from the turbo is diverted around the engine on these closed throttle situations and combined with a fuel and ignition strategy (from the ECU), ensuring the turbine speed is maintained. A usable boost is ready when the throttle is opened again. The Air the turbocharger pressurises is diverted around the engine directly into the pre-turbo exhaust manifold, igniting a flame that continues to drive the turbocharger.

Chris Doumbos

Chris Doumbos, Turbosmart Head Engineer, the pioneer behind the Award Winning Universal EM BOV, explains a little about the Anti-Lag Valve.

“The fresh air valve allows for incoming fresh air to be diverted safely into the exhaust manifold, pre-turbo with the throttle closed to allow for safer spooling of the turbocharger without the potentially damaging combustion event style anti-lag that can induce high engine & turbo stresses, even break connecting rods”, states Doumbos.

“The fresh air ALS valve is a sealed twin-chamber design with the top port being the primary control port; the spring is designed to open under vacuum conditions to allow for the air to bypass into the exhaust manifold, the lower chamber for twin port control methods to control the valve irrespective of manifold pressure and shaft seal allows for the leak.”

Fresh AIr Anti-lag Valve

The all-new addition to the Turbosmart lineup is the fresh air ALV40 (Anti-Lag Valve). We feature a 40mm valve diameter, a purpose-designed actuator housing, and an inverted diaphragm and are supplied with multiple fittings for ease of fitment and fabrication.

Distributor orders can be placed from December 2018.

Turbosmart Takes Out Top Award at SEMA 2018

Turbosmart GMs with SEMA award

Australian automotive aftermarket manufacturer, Turbosmart, has been awarded the winner for the coveted Performance-Street New Product Award at SEMA 2018

The new Universal Kompact EM (Electro-Mechanical) Diverter Valve (patent-pending) seized the position of Performance-Racing Product, one of the most highly regarded and coveted awards that can be bestowed at the annual international event.

The Turbosmart team went to the awards breakfast to hear the announcement. It was indeed a particular moment in the 21-year history of the company as the Executive General Management Team went up to receive the very last and one of the most esteemed award categories. Marty Staggs, VP & GM of Turbosmart USA, was given the honour of addressing the packed centre as he reflected on the long history of the business and the path the company has taken to reach this milestone. However, the key theme of his message was how a dedicated team with a passion for motorsports and serving the aftermarket industry is the intertwined dynamic of what forms the lifeblood of Turbosmart across the globe.

CEO NIC Cooper

“We have been doing this for a very long time, and we have received a lot of recognition from the people at SEMA over the years with several different awards, but this is something extraordinary and a huge honour. This is a testament to the time and work that our whole team has put into making this project come to life and shows that we are determined to make the best possible products for our customers. The fact that this is an Australian business with many centres of operation across the entire world is something that we are very proud of. To receive an award like this helps us stamp our ongoing commitment to quality and performance to the entire international community of motoring enthusiasts throughout the world”, said Nic Cooper, Turbosmart Founder & CEO.

Among the people present was Stewart Mahony, Group General Manager for Turbosmart.

“Our business is constantly focused on making sure that when we bring out a new product, it is simply the best that you can get”, stated Mahony. “We have a great deal of competition out there, but we always keep our eyes and ears focused on the customer’s needs. They are the centre of everything that we do. They are why we get out of bed every morning to do what we do. This award shows that. This award sends a statement that Turbosmart manufactures products that are cutting edge in their design and revolutionary in their offering. It is inspiring news”.

Turbosmart Team at SEMA 2018 awards

Marty Staggs, Vice President

Turbosmart has taken giant leaps and bounds over the last 12 months by releasing their GenV Wastegate range and the Kompact EM-BOV series, and this marks another step forward in the aftermarket industry for the Turbosmart name.

“This award is something special to all of us. It is a huge testament to the business, but this doesn’t mark the end of a long road but the beginning of new roads for us. We will continue to push ahead and continue to bring new products and new solutions for customers. If you look at the last year, you can really see how far the company has jumped ahead in our offerings. So while this award means a lot to us, it won’t serve as a distraction, and it won’t cause us to take our foot off the pedal. We will keep ramping up, and we will keep steaming ahead”, remarked Marty Staggs, Vice-President and General Manager, of Turbosmart USA.

The Turbosmart Universal Kompact EM-BOV

Kompact EM-BOV

Due to the existing patent-pending electronic actuation technology, the Universal Kompact EM-BOV allows for seamless integration into vehicles that require the actuation of the BOV to be controlled via the engine ECU without compromising flow or performance. The new universal Kompact EM range flows higher than existing compressor cover solutions. It provides an alternate option where hybrid turbochargers demand more flow to prevent the compressor from falling into a surge with rapid load changes.

The all-billet construction and high-temperature seals allow for a leak-proof design that will provide excellent results in all conditions. The body features a modular design where multiple fittings and ports can be swapped to make the unit as expendable as possible. 4 equispaced bolt holes are located at the base of the body to allow for bracketry to be implemented and expanded into different models, for example, the Fiat OE Pierburg replacement.

The units are available in Plumb-back (100% re-circulation), Dual port (50% re-circulation, 50% vent to atmosphere and Supersonic (100% vent to atmosphere)
