ESG50 StraightGate50 by Turbosmart

The StraightGate50 eSG50 from Turbosmart is a 50mm (1.97in) butterfly valve style external wastegate for turbocharged engines. The StraightGate50  provides more flow than any conventional 60mm poppet style valve while also providing more control and almost linear response for unparalleled boost control throughout the entire operating range. This is Boost Control re-imagined!

Developed off the back of Turbosmart’s SEMA 2019 New Product Award Winning eWG range with full electronic actuation and control, the StraightGate50 features an in-house designed, CFD driven and real-world validated butterfly valve style external wastegate which provides all the benefits of over two decades of boost control experience with the latest technology for truly advanced boost control strategies with virtually no limits.

The valve body is non-direction and can be installed radially through 360 degrees on the V-Band. The actuator housing can also be located in any of the three clocking positions for truly universal fitment.

ESG50 StraightGate50 Thermally tested to 1250°C / 2280°F

Thermally stable and tested to 1250°C / 2280°F, the eSG50 is capable in the most demanding environments while providing control never before seen before via liquid cooling and the inclusion of a ceramic thermal insulating spacer between the actuator and valve body. The onboard temperature & position sensor outputs allow for advanced control strategies.

This StraightGate50 50mm Valve controls a smaller 40mm valve, with flow exceeding that of a traditional 60mm valve. Teamed with Electronic Actuation, all the limitations of conventional boost control are a compromise of the past. With appropriate manifold priority, these valves can provide 100% bypass for zero boost up to maximum boost and do so faster than any valve before. Full valve actuation can be performed in 63ms and give an unparalleled tuning window.

Incorporating Turbosmart’s Zero-BackDrive technology means the valve consumes no current while stationary reducing overall current requirements and ability against high drive pressure levels never before seen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ensure you have an over-boost cut-out. This is a safety feature built into basically all factory, aftermarket & programmable ECU’s. You can never be too careful. Make sure it is set at a sensible & reasonable limit. Increasing the boost will put more load on your engine and there are other tune related factors you must consider. If in any doubt, speak with a professional tuner / calibrator.

Fast. Full Valve Actuation can be achieved in 63ms.

You will need a programmable ECU (Engine Control Unit) and a ‘High Current’ (20Amp) output H-Bridge output. This can be done on some ECU’s (speak with your manufacturer) or, via an external H-Bridge module. The Turbosmart BlackBox is available as an external driver which can be controlled via recalibrated / programmable factory ECU’s (Via traditional PWM boost control output) or with a programmable aftermarket ECU via PWM, 0-5v Analogue output or with CAN based override.

Yes. There are 3 clocking options to choose from. The valve body itself is also rotatable on the V-band axis and is non-directional so you have huge flexibility with fitment.

Just the one – None. The Turbosmart eWG series is fully adjustable without the need for springs. It can actuate against extreme levels of drive and backpressure and does so without any springs at all. There is nothing to change, ever. IT also features our ‘Zero BackDrive’ technology to further bolster its ability against high drive pressures. This means the largest tuning window possible with no minimum boost pressure limitations of traditional wastegate systems.

Frequently Asked Questions?

No, you just need to remove the factory valve completely & fit the Turbosmart Kompact Valve in its place – No fiddly bits.

Simple: These won’t leak when others will & are built for more boost than you can make. Also, they’re purpose-built for this application to provide maximum throttle response are generally closed until needed to open (unlike other valves) that are usually open until required to close. The positive sealing O-ring system combined with Turbosmart’s boost-balance technology means no matter how much boost you feed it, we’ve got even more holding the valve shut…

Yes: Both the blow-off valve and actuators are bolt-on components. While the actuator requires you to observe the instructions and setup pre-load on the rod, this quite a simple and well-documented process – IF you’re unsure, please ask – we’re always happy to help

Leverage and Control: The large surface area of the upgraded Turbosmart actuators mean even for an identical peak boost level, we can give you more boost before peek boost & more across the top end of the RPM range where efficiency starts to drop & boost is harder to come by. The improved leverage of our diaphragm and spring combination is like using a longer tire iron on your lug nuts – easier & with more control and this means more boost throughout the rev range!

Electronic Anti-lag Valves by Turbosmart

In 2018, Turbosmart released their Anti-Lag Valve, the ALV40 to much acclaim. For 2021 they’ve expanded on this, introducing the 2019 SEMA award-winning technology of the eWG electronic gate & combining the two to make the world’s most controllable fresh-air anti-lag valve, the eALV40.

The GENV architecture both the electronic external wastegate range and the ALV40 are built on is truly modular, allowing interchangeable actuator housings between all body sizes & full 360-degree rotatable housings for limitless mounting, hose & wire routing.

Traditionally, pneumatic operated anti-lag valves can often require external canisters, check valves and multiple solenoids for operation. These systems are proven & an extremely effective anti-lag strategy, however, the eALV40 from Turbosmart changes all that with full electronic actuation & control from your aftermarket ECU.

The control strategy is shared with the GenV eWG range, requiring an H-Bridge control output most commonly used for electronic throttle bodies. The eALV40 includes both a valve position sensor & onboard temperature sensor for data logging and safety strategies.

Further expanding the range, Turbosmart has introduced a 6 port outlet weld flange to help facilitate fitment on 6 & 12 cylinder engines. The full range now includes both pneumatic & electronically actuated, specially designed anti-lag valves as well as outlet weld-on fittings including double, three, four, five & now six-port outlets.

Frequently Asked Questions

The concept of anti-lag is to reduce or eliminate turbocharger lag. Turbocharger lag is generally considered the time it takes for your engine to produce boost. Note, we say time – Not RPM. Anti-Lag is in an improvement in response, it will not make a large turbo create boost earlier in the RPM range on a dyno (as an example), but a well setup system will ensure you maintain boost between gear changes and dynamic (On / Off) throttle situations as seen in motorsports such as drifting, rallying and such.

There are a couple of Anti-Lag strategies based on your engine, vehicle and ECU. The Turbosmart ‘Fresh Air’ ALV40 is the basis of a full bypass system where the valve actually opens when the throttle is closed & allows compressed air from the turbocharger to be directed into the exhaust manifold prior to the turbocharger – effectively ‘around’ the engine. This compressed-air requires an ECU strategy of additional fuel & adjusted ignition timing to effectively ignite and control a burn, in the manifold right before the turbo. This burn creates energy, which can maintain turbine speed, also known as boost.

Not at all, no. There are a couple of key differences and yes, you require more hardware to do it. Throttle Kick style Anti-Lag has been a feature on most aftermarket ECU’s for some time. Fresh Air Anti-Lag however has several distinct benefits. The first is significantly lower EGT’s during Anti-Lag operation and that means greater reliability of your turbocharger, manifold and accessories. The other benefit is around vacuum boosted brake systems. Vehicles fitted with these types of braking systems (most cars) will lose braking assistance when kick-type Anti-Lag is activated as the engine does not run in a vacuum. A Fresh Air Anti-Lag system however does have vacuum and maintains all vacuum bases & boosted accessories when in operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The Turbosmart eWG range works with the modular housings of the Gen-V products, so wherever your Turbosmart Gen-V products are fitted, the eWG will bolt on as they use the same mounting & flange orientation. The Actuator housings of the new eWG range are different, so you’ll need to make sure there is room for the new design in your engine bay.

72mm per second – Full travel can be achieved in 290ms. Fast.

Just the one option: None. The Turbosmart eWG is fully adjustable without the need for springs. It can actuate boost against extreme levels of backpressure and does so without any springs. Nothing to change, ever. It also features a unique ‘zero-back-drive’ to bolster its ability against high drive pressures further.

Yes, you can – In fact, it’s one of the situations that the eWG would be ideal for. You will not need the external compressed gas tank, the lines or the solenoid – You need the eWG.

You will need a programmable ECU (Engine Control Unit). You will need a ‘high current’ output and a spare analogue input for a position (minimum) to make it work. Most quality ECU’s can drive the gate for accurate boost control using well under 20 Amp in current – Most applications are likely to use less than 14 Amp. However, less sophisticated boost control strategies may see high peak demands under high load (closing against high drive pressure). Best speak to your specialist or calibrator about your needs if you have any questions on what is needed.

Yes. The modular design of the GenV Range of External Wastegates means you can rotate the actuator housing 360 degrees for virtually unlimited orientation.

The Turbosmart eWG Range all have six wires – That covers two wires for the Electronic Motor, to be driven via an H-Bridge outlet. The remaining cover the Onboard hi-resolution position sensor and onboard controller temperature sensor.
